Odyssey

On Saturday my parents came up to visit us. Dad kept Grampa busy fixing the front door and working on the wood boiler house repairs. Grammie & I took the boys & dogs for a walk up the hill - great exercise! Then, they both helped Dad to shore up the roof of the garage where we want to put the piggie for the winter. Their help is greatly appreciated!! So, we took them out to dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant. It was a wonderful meal and we all left feeling uncomfortably full.

After all of our automobile research, Honda Odysseys were one of the vehicles that we were really interested in. Unfortunately, because they are so well-liked, there aren't very many for sale, and the ones that are for sale are out of our price-range. But, Dad found one yesterday and immediately e-mailed on it. Somehow we were first in line and the guy called us first thing this morning. We packed up the boys and headed for Topsham.

We had to stop 3 times for me to get out and walk off the back pain, so it took 2 hours to drive there. The couple that were selling it, also have 2 boys, one of which was celebrating his birthday. Our boys were invited to join in the festivities! Which, I thought was wicked nice. They had a great time and Dad & I had a really great visit with their parents. They were very nice people and the Odyssey was just what we were looking for - albeit a bit older ('97), with more miles (158,000), but it will give us a good idea if this is the type of vehicle that I need to be driving, without spending a fortune on a new vehicle.

The very first thing that I was able to do, before even getting into it, was to push a button and raise the driver's seat several inches up off the floor - that got my knees level with my hips, as opposed to higher - a definite step in the right direction! I drove it around their neighborhood for a while and decided that I really liked it. Dad started negotiations and for less than the advertised price, the guy threw in a set of almost-new winter tires and a 4-place trailer hitch bike rack!! PERFECT!!

Now, the big test - the long drive home. I was very comfortable driving it, but by the time we hit the really bumpy roads in our neighborhood, my back was starting to feel tired. After driving over those bumps, even though it rides ever so much better than either of our Saturns, I was feeling a bit of pain. However, when I got home and went to get out, I was able to stand right up and walk away with being hunched over in pain. Whoo! Hoo!! What an improvement!!

So, even though it's not as cool, or as pretty a car as I had hoped to get, and it's so not any of my favorite colors (it's blue/green), it should keep me from aggravating my back until it goes into spasms, and that's our objective right now. The boys love it because it gives them tons more space...
